STATE AND ART: A Brief Review State is a crucial element in
the art world. It has been a very prolonged history for the government
of Indonesia to set up (with direct or indirect intervention) an ideal
art world basing on its own preference from the post-sovereignty of the
Dutch government to Republik Indonesia Serikat (Republic of United
States of Indonesia) in 1949 until the most recent government today.
An alternative space is an organism. Just like a living
being, it grows, develops and dies. Organizers of the alternative space
are in fact similar to caretakers of a cemetery. They decorate the grave
stones, serve and take care of the visitors who come and if necessary
move the graves when the cemetery becomes over populated. The shifting
idea of the function of the alternative space, in my experience, is
caused by situations outside of the space itself, namely; political,
economic, and social situations. This clearly suggests that the
existence of such spaces depends on the situations outside its white
walls. The story below can perhaps describe this situation.
Kedai Kebun is an alternative art space in Yogyakarta managed
independently by artists and consisting of a gallery, performance
space, restaurant , bookstore and ‘HALTE’ – a text learning media
in art.
Kedai Kebun
is a small community established with the purpose
of providing an arena of learning and studying, in the context of
developing sensibilities to all phenomena of social transformation
through art.
All activities of Kedai Kebun Forum
are supported by Kedai Kebun restaurant.

Exhibition "GONDOMANAN PROJECT"
Proyek Seni Gondomanan is an artistic project done by artists and
concludes in art-making of comics, videos, and music. This program was
preceded by an exhibition by KUNCI Cultural Studies Centre (June 8 –
July 7) revealing the social-economic-politic map of the community along
the side road of Gondomanan. The design of this project is to fashion
movements, rythms, and routine activities all in the side road of
Gondomanan and from the intersection of Klenteng until Pojok Beteng
Wetan. By means of stylishness, deformation, hyperbolism and
superlativism strategies and embedded in social knowledge, artists try
to imagine a possibility of changes might happen to the area.

Second hand shop break out violently in
Jogja. Almost in every corner of the street this kind of
shop is exist. The existance of these shops are gloried by
almost of young artists in here. You can find every kind
of cloth here, from t-shirts, shorts, longs, jackets,
jumpers, leather suits, bag – casual/formal, hat, etc. If
we lucky, we will find the branded one or may Korean army
uniform, but we used to be tuff to sort and turn upside
down the mound of clothes. In the Javanese language
[turn upside down] means /ngabul-abul/ so we call
/abul-abul/ or /awul-awul/ for this kind of shop. In our
community, the luckiest man in the second hand clothes
matter is Nuning – Nur Aini Juliastuti – Exponent of Kunci
Cultural Studies Center. This young women is very tuff in
the bargain action. She get oftenly for only Rp. 3.000,-
per t-shirt. Than cause of her expertise we call her “the
Queen of Awul-awul”. Moreover, she know very well some
awul-awul’ regulation, such us, when they make sale!!
Crazy…ha..the second hand make sale! Nuning say, sometime
the awul-awuls just give for free if the new stock come.
Than the consumer in the sale time, is becak driver,
beggar, etc.
