Project Overview
After Mural 'epidemic' has been blowing up rapidly in
Yogyakarta within several years later, and resulting so many
interesting phenomena, an Arts project namely Re:Publik Art tried to
offer an alternative point of view which is more fresh on mural and
graffiti. Re:publik
Art started from criticized ideas considering to mural tendencies on
being more decorative and later also being occupied by some
corporation. Mural, which is aims to be a social expression medium had
been 'spiced' by many logo's of commercial advertising, just like
billboards and another outdoor advertisings.
In order to discover and present much more fresh ideas on mural and
graffiti, Re:Publik held a series of activities, start with seminar,
workshop, and finished by an outdoor visual art action during a whole
month on September in Yogyakarta.
Related to relation between art and public space, this
project aims to questioned again and re-tracking the existence of public
space in Yogyakarta. Is it true that public spaces are exist here? Or it
just a myth of the city of culture, while one of pre-requirement of a
city plan is there must be an open space that able to being accessed
democratically by citizens? Is it true, that public space is not just a
thing systematically tend to be created by city's bureaucrat ?
Is it true that sporadically struggle by citizens to seized up and
created their own public space is the only way in order to bring publics
rights back as a citizen?
Through these series of activities, arts
action, and organizing networks that mentioned above, Re:Publik Art
expect that activities in public space will be highly rising and
resulted what we idealized on public space: Our space.

Notes of September Action
Re:Publik ARt Actions were hold in 16 pointed location among Yogyakarta,
chosen as a sites to do the works or as place where those works are
being presented.
Two artists from France, l’Atlas and Sun7, working during first
half month of September and had finished their graffiti in Cendana
street and in Pasar Kembang areas. A group of local artists with
graffiti
and visual art background doing their works along line of rolling door
of shops in Mataram Street. A work, whish is also an energy
saving campaign specially presented in south side wall of Perwakilan
street. Another mural and graffiti also had been well done in Selokan Mataram
cross junction. Medium of graffiti also taken wider, not only drew
up on the wall but also spread out on the street, formed as zebra
cross, with a certain number of public services attached on it,
placed in Kaliurang street and in the north cross junction of
Malioboro street. Besides wall painting and graffiti, Re:Publik Art
also holding some three dimension art works.
Still in Tugu train station, Re:Publik Art presented Direction signs
Robots and that can used as information board also, and
alternative garbage baskets. Aims to create friendly street for
children, one of three dimension art works are presented near 3
Elementary School in Yogyakarta. Those works are titled
halte tunggu, that used as a stopping place for children while they
waiting for their family's to pick them up after school, and
Safety Robots. Both of those works are designed friendly with
children imagination, and functional at once to maintain some bad effect
of traffic jams nearby school environment, which being so crowded after
school time.
Jembatan Juminahan (Juminahan bridge) in Code river areas also
being chosen as a palce to presented a mechanical works which aims to
raise people awareness to preserve their healthy life environment.
Together with this work, a mural also being presented there, which bring
reconciliation theme, conform to local history of that bridge
reconstruction.
The last three dimensional work which aims to digging up the potential
appearance of local heroes. Re:Publik Art choose to present one of an
iconic local heroes, Gundala Putera Petir, in front of SMAN 9 Yogyakarta
(Senior High School building). this icon seem important for, beside this
icon is local product which influenced to certain generation before,
also we believe that this kinds of idioms is important to be presented
as alternative signs of heroes mind construction in public space.
On 29th September, star from 01.00 pm to 8.00 pm, one day
before Republik Art event closing, we presented Gardanalla Toko
Cerita (Gardanalla Stories shop), in Galeria Mall. This story shop is
an alternative forms of performance art in public space, that presenting
actors or non actors who wants to share their stories through their
personal object collections which is being sale and displayed on
the shop. a personal story is kept inside each object. a story about
people's within their social circle.
After more than a month Re:Publik Art tried to realize our ideas, now,
it's time for public to give their opinion and response. By those
responses, the growing of activities in public space will be kept away,
just like the way Re:Publik give response to other movements before.
Somehow, the dream to create a more comfortable city space for living,
is not proper enough, if it just left as an empty dream.
